Non resident Keralite Dr.Narayanan Komarath dreams of constructing ‘buildings’, not in his adopted land of USA but in the astral world of outer space.

Prof. Komarath has recently formulated the concept of ‘Tailored force field for space based construction’, whereby radio waves could be used to move the building blocks from the asteroid belt in the solar system and bring them together to form a space station.

That is to say, the construction will need neither building stones from the earth nor labourers, either human or robotic, to place them in position.

His findings have been presented last month before the august body, National Institute of Advanced Concepts, NASA and their preliminary reaction has been positive.  According to Robert Casanova, Director of NIAC, the findings open up a plethora of possibilities.

Dr. Narayanan, who went to USA 25 years ago, still retains the Indian citizenship.  Once a year he visits his ancestral home at Pazhaya Nadakkavu, Thrissur.  Dr. Narayanan studied at Govt. Model Boys High School, Thrissur and IIT, Chennai.  He then went to Georgia Institute of Technology, USA where he did his Ph.D in aeronautical engineering and later became a Professor there.

2 US patents, 50 research works, 140 research papers are his contribution in the field.  However, it is his contribution as a teacher that makes him the toast of Georgia Institute of Technology.  He has so far taught and guided more than 1500 aeronautical engineers.  No wonder he won the award for the best research guide 5 times and was adjudged the ‘most valuable professor’ in 1991.

His wife Padma is a senior engineer in a software firm in Atlanta.
