PONNU KANI: MIDWIFE TO 200 PLUS BIRTHS | ||||||
|
If the prenatal position of the baby was not normal, midwife Ponnu Kani of Periyakkod Adivasi Colony, Nandiyode, Nedumangad, Thiruvananthapuram had a simple medicine. During those days bereft of doctors and medicines, she used to resort to the traditional herbal medicines, which succeeded just as surely as surgery succeedS now. Now
89 and in the sunset years of her life, Kani had been midwife to more than
200 births. It was not the
adivasis alone who made use of her talent. Earlier, during emergencies, people used to come to the
colony in the middle of the night with the SOS message.
Once she reached the scene, the relatives of the women felt
relieved. Even
today she prescribes herbal medicines to young children and many people
from the taluk come seeking her guidance. To
the question from where she learned the art and craft of midwifery, she
replies: “God and the forest deities have taught me.” The
people of the area certify to her claim never to have made a mistake in
her work. After her husband
Gopalan Kani died 5 years ago, she now lives with her daughter.
She has 5 sons and 3 daughters.
