Jumana Kadiri, a 10th standard student, proposes that cooking be given the status of an art, as in the olden days.  She can say so, for she is a master chef who has proved her mettle by becoming the champion two years in a row in Cooking in the Work Experience section of the State School Sasthra Mela.

She prepared not 4 or 5 but 62 dishes within 4 hours using raw materials worth just Rs.150 to win the competition hands down.  Incidentally, the theme of the competition was ‘Economic and Nutricious Food Making’ and her talent in making use of common, back-of-the-yard items to brew mouth-watering concoctions surely impressed the judges.

This student of St.Theresa’s Anglo-Indian School, Kannur is the daughter of C.V.Kadiri and Hasina, Pazhayangadi, Kannur.  She picked up the art of cooking from her grandmother and mother.  The grandmother used to give her tips on nutritious and beauty-enhancing recipes.

She is an active member of the Rotary Interact Club and tries her hand at poetry writing and elocution.  Milhaj, a student of 2nd year B.com is her brother.

Kurunthotti is an important medicine in ayruveda.  But Jumana made a nice dish (thoran) out of its leaves. But the proof of the pudding was perhaps her ‘thavidu payasam’, made out of water used for clean rice.  It was one item that impressed everyone.
