Traditional healer of snakebites,  does not have any pretence about the efficacy of her treatment.  “I try to help those who come here reposing faith in me.  Using the system of medicine I know, I have been able to save many a person,” she says.

Though she learned the art and craft of treating poisons from her father, nonagenarian Sankaran Namboodiri, she never tried her hand in it till she married and came over to her husband’s house.  As demand increased, she consented to try her hand in it.

Her unique experiences include having cured a patient thrice in critical stages for snakebite.  Another time she was able to bring back to life a patient who was in unconscious state for 1 month.

It is at a critical state, when the patient appears to be sinking, that the healer tries the trump card in his or her repertoire: the ‘kalavanchana’.  It is named so as it is believed to cheat Yama and bring back the life of the patient.  “Courage for doing it comes only after some experience,” she says.

Her son Brahmadattan has been studying the traditional knowledge from his grandfather for the past 6 years.  He helps her in the treatment.
