If one knows the work and is willing to work hard, then there is no more profitable crop than vegetables for cultivation.  Farmer Vijayan, Ottupara, Muriyam Thanni, near Sreekrishnapuram, Palakkad is a practitioner of this dictum.

In the 2˝ acres of ancestral land and the 3 acres of leased plot, he continues the success story.  Although he maintains cows and does cultivation of rice and banana, it is the vegetables that give him a yield round the year.

Although he cultivates almost all the vegetables, he times their production to suit the needs of the market.  For example, brinjal in rainy season and ‘louki’ during Ramadan are profitable, according to him.

He takes no risk with seeds and buys them mostly from Kerala Agricultural University.  Ottappalam market is his selling place.  The produce are plucked around 4 o’clock in the morning and transported to the market by bus or private jeep.  After the produce is auctioned off at the market, 10% of the amount has to be deposited as charges for the marketing facility.

His wife Lalitha assists him in the farming work beside looking after the household works.  His son Binesh, a casual worker in KSEB, too assists Vijayan in the farm.
