28 PRESIDENTIAL MEDALS FOR SCOUTS AND GUIDES OF RURAL SCHOOL | ||||||
|
Which is the school that has the highest number of scouts and guides in the State? Answer: the same school whose scouts and guides won the maximum number of awards from the President of India, recently. The school with 28 award winners is P.T.M.Higher Secondary School, Thazhekkat, Palakkad, where the total number of scouts and guides is nearly 500. The disciplined students and their activities are the inspirations for more students to join the organization year after year, say the teachers. Not restricting their activities to keeping the school and surroundings clean, the scarfed volunteers spread out into the village, creating awareness about hygiene and engaging themselves in road construction and afforestation. Carrying out such extra curricular activities without compromising on their studies has resulted in all-round goodwill for the youngsters. As the collection of Rs.2 per student per year is the only working capital of the unit, the expenses towards uniform and travel are usually borne by the students themselves. To lead the volunteers there are 7 scout masters and 8 guides captains. The President’s award winners are selected from among the State level Rajya Puraskar award winners, based on their excellence in the activities. This time, from the 44 Rajya Puraskar winners, 18 scouts and 10 guides from the school made it to the President’s list. The Principal of the 3000-stududent school is Mathew Scaria, who happens to be the District Commissioner of Scouts and Guides. The winners will receive their awards at a function to be held in New Delhi this month end.
