|
It took LKG student Johnson just 1 hour 50 minutes of determined effort to cross the 2.5km wide Vembanad Lake. The 4½-year-old Johnson, a student of Holy Kings’ English Medium School, Piravam surmounted the waves and the last minute heavy downpour to reach the finishing point. Son of Johny, Kunjammattil, Piravam, Johnson had begun the quest at 7.45am from the Thavanakkadavu at Pallippuram. Coach Biju Thankappan accompanied him all the way. Just 500 m from the finishing point, heavy rains challenged the steady progress of the boy, who used breaststroke style for the effort. Johnson, who started swimming as a summertime hobby had won 1st prize in breaststroke in the under 8 years category in the competition conducted by Ernakulam Aquatic Association. His coach Biju is trainer at the Dolphin Aquatic Club, Piravam and the Physical Education teacher at St.Joseph’s School, Keezhoor.
