K.K.SUKUMARAN: DONATING HEART POSTUMOUSLY FOR THE 1ST HEART TRANSPLANT IN KERALA | ||||||
|
3 years ago, when K.K.Sukumaran and his wife pledged their eyes, they wouldn’t have perhaps thought of the greater donation he was to make posthumously. Sukumaran, a social activist from Paravoor and a local leader of coconut climbers’ union, met with an automobile accident on May 11 that left him clinically dead. Even in the midst of this tragedy, his relatives agreed to donate his heart to replace the diseased heart of a poor patient, Abraham. The rest is history. Using the donated heart, the doctors of Medical Trust Hospital, Ernakulam, led by did the 1st heart transplant operation in Kerala. Dr. Jose was the 1st in Kerala to do heart surgeries on beating hearts. He was a member of many teams that did heart transplant operations abroad. Sukumaran used to tell his children Sumitha, Sujith and Sunil to donate eyes and kidney. By donating his heart to save a patient, Sukumaran has already won the hearts of many.
