WINSTON NETTO: WORKING FOR THE BLIND FROM LONDON |

His name may not be familiar to the common folks of Kerala. But to the blind here, Winston Netto has the aura of a saviour. The main activity of Netto, who has been living in London for the past quarter century, is the rehabilitation of the blind. Under the aegis of Kerala Federation for the Blind, he has been able to rehabilitate about 800 blind people and their families in 14 districts of Kerala. He went to England for higher studies after obtaining bachelor degree in commerce from Fathima Matha National College, Kollam. He later joined the civil services there after completion of higher studies. Even in London he was involved in charity activities. Once on a visit to Kerala he met George Kutty, an office bearer of the Federation of the Blind. That marked his association with the organization. With the help of philanthropists, he finds the money needed for the activities of the Federation in Kerala. His aim to render the blind self-reliant by making them self-employed. Towards this end, many vocational training centers of the Federation have been operating in many parts of the State. He is in Kerala this time with a project to institute a scholarship for the poor postgraduate students of Social Science, Sociology, Social Work. He plans to utilize the scholarship winners to work among the blind. He lives in London with his wife Sosamma and children Vijay, Sanjay and Manju.
