SNEHA SADAN: WATER CONSERVATION EFFORTS FOR A RESETTLEMENT COLONY |
||||||||
|
The Panaykachira Resettlement Colony at Koruthode, Kottayam was started in 1972 to house 300 families living by the roadside. Obtaining sufficient drinking water was the perennial problem faced by the inhabitants from the beginning. Sneha Sadan, an organization of Medical Mission nuns, which came to live with the people, has formulated a method of mitigating the scarcity of water. For water conservation, the Sadan employs rainwater harvesting. 10000-litre ferro cement tank put up by the Sadan is filled with water pumped from the well during rainy season. Rain water, which is allowed to percolate, recharges the ground water and in turn fills up the well. During summer months the water from the storage tank is used as emergency stock. Now many houses in the colony employ this technique to manage water. Sneha Sadan employs its 25-cent land to good use. By digging pits furrows, they train all the water to seep into the soil. Now the Sadan is giving shape to a solution on a larger scale. It is based on conservation efforts in watersheds of 2 adjacent hills, Idivettum Para Mala and Panaykkachira Mala.
