DR.R.J.MANJOORAN: FIRST MALAYALI TO HEAD INDIAN CARDIOLOGICAL SOCIETY |

Among peers he may be known for the 18-hour heart surgery he performed or the top post of Indian Cardiological Society that he now adorns. But to hundreds of patients Dr.R.J.Manjooran is someone who has given them a new lease of life. It was his teacher in St.George School, North Paravoor who told lad Rajan Joseph that the pear-shaped object he used to dream was actually the human heart. The word ‘heart’ and its shape stirred something deep inside the young one’s mind. So when he joined U.C.College, Aluva for Intermediate course, he naturally chose Biology as his subject. From then onwards it was academic records all the way. Rank holder in intermediate exams, he graduated in MBBS from Medical College, Kozhikode where he won 10 gold medals during 5 years of study. He completed his M.D with distinction from Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi in 1971 and D.M from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. Later he returned to Kerala and joined the Medical College at Kottayam as Professor of Cardiology. In 1999 he retired from service. During this time many honours came his way. In 1977 he received the fellowship of WHO. Similarly, he had the opportunity to work in leading institutions in the West: U.K.National Heart Hospital and Green Lane Hospital, Auckland. At present he is the Medical Director and Chief Cardiologist at H&W Cardiac Centre, Kottayam. He is the 1st Malayalee to be elevated to the post of president of Indian Cardiological Society. “Reaching this post has been an achievement for me. The general impression is that one cannot develop professionally being in Kerala. If someone like me who was born in the rural mileu of Chakkarakkadavu in Vypin and who studied in Malayalam-medium schools could achieve this much, then why should one leave Kerala? Or utter English without knowing the meaning? I am happy that I could reach the heights by remaining in Kerala.”
