Only few veterinary hospitals exist in Kerala where animals can be operated under proper anesthesia. Eminent veterinary surgeon and former secretary of the national Veterinary Council, Dr. Ram Kumar has opened an operation theatre in a portion of his house at EVRA 50, Eswaravilasom Road, Thiruvananthapuram to bring relief to animals and their human lovers.

The modified operation theatre has a visitors’ room, a surgery room and a post operation rest room. The theatre has equipments for the investigation of throat and ears, arrangements for anesthesia, modern instruments for surgery etc.

Ram Kumar’s childhood in the city home was amidst domestic animals.  His father was a founder of the Kerala Kennel Club and a lover of animals.  With this background he chose veterinary science as his field of study and profession.

After graduation from Kerala Agriculture University, he did his post graduation from the Veterinary College, Hissar, Haryana.  Later he did his doctoral work in Veterinary Orthopedics at the Punjab Agriculture College.  After taking up the post of lecturer there, he was instrumental in saving many quadrupeds with broken bones that usually ended up in slaughter house otherwise.

After a brief stint in Libya, he came back to head the veterinary surgery wing of the Kashmir Agricultural University.  The assassination of the then Vice Chancellor of the University saw him shifting base to Delhi to become the Secretary of Veterinary Council. In that capacity he was instrumental in unifying the veterinary syllabus and elevating the status of the profession.

After a decade of service there he has come back to Kerala with a view to do something for the dairy farmers.  And for that purpose he has chosen Maranallur village.
