After 3 decades of answering queries relating to the University examinations et al, when K.M.Gopinatha Kurup retires from service, he plans to continue his own service of providing correct information to the public.

Kurup, who used to answer queries relating to the Kerala University without the aid of written notes or dusty files, was a boon to students. It is a measure of his popularity and effectiveness that after a year of service in the library, the rest of his career was in the Information wing.  By sticking to the information wing, he had sacrificed promotion chances in the other stream.  But to Kurup this was life’s calling and he was prepared for the sacrifice.

Be it bandh or hartal, he comes to the office at 9.30 a.m and starts facing the eager public.  Whatever the mood of the enquirers, Kururp’s expression is one of eager helpfulness.  The visitor can get full and detailed information from him.  In addition, he collects and disseminates information about AG’s office, DPI, RCC and Pareeksha Bhavan also.

Even in his residence at Binitha Bhavan, Karyavattam, Kurup is busy answering queries over phone.  He provides free consultation on Government service matters featured in newspapers.

His photographic memory has been helpful to Kurup in answering queries.  However, it is his willingness to help that distinguishes him above everything else.

He recollects an incident that happened 10 years ago.  A foreigner, who happened to reach the enquiry counter, requested his help to go to Kovalam.  Kurup took him outside and arranged a taxi for him.  3 months later the Vice Chancellor received a letter from the satisfied foreigner praising the service of Kurup.

In another incident, about 5 years ago, a group of students who weren’t satisfied with his replies went out and came back with an irate mob of 30.  But when the new members of the group saw that it was Kurup who had answered their comrades in the first place, their visage suddenly changed.  “Kurup would have given the correct information”, they said, and walked away.
