He started thinking of developing a paddy thresher when the traditional method led to loss of many grains with the chaff.  And so with a simple design, and using traditional materials,  Kesavan has developed the ‘Karshak Paddy Thresher’ that is useful for small and medium paddy cultivators.

The main parts of the machine consists of a 3ft long shaft and a table of length 4 ft.  The shaft is connected to the table and a rotating spike is placed at one end of the shaft.  The rotating wooden spike is driven by a 0.5HP motor kept under the table portion.  The paddy is pushed towards the rotating spike to effect threshing.

Without any formal training, any one can start operating the machine.   Besides, the machine can be operated by one individual.  At 38 kgs, it is portable and has much less maintenance work.

He makes the machines to order. “The machines are priced at Rs.4800 including motor. However, I have no intention to make its production a business,” says Kesavan.

The Central Agricultural Ministry and the Engineering wing of State Agriculture Department have certified the product.  However, he hasnot received the encouragement or assistance from the Government.
