Without the financial support of Government or any donor agency, the Manjoor Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society has completed 25 years of activity and has generated assets worth Rs.1 crore.

What began in 1975 with 53 members and a total capital of Rs.1000 in a rented building at Manjoor Panchayat in Kottayam has now grown into a model Society with its own building and a modern 10000 litre-capacity pasteurization plant.  8 out of its 13 collection centers too are owned by the Society and the membership has increased to 3942.  The Society, which started with a collection of 38 litres now collects 4000 litres of milk daily.

V.L.Thomas of Valakulam, who was the founder-president of the Society for many years, took the leadership role in organising the members.  His effort has made a significant contribution towards the present achievements of the organisation.

The Cooperative has been able to offer the 700 milk producers of the Panchayat a better price than ‘Milma’.  In addition, they are provided cattle feed of Kerala Feeds at concessional rate.  Periodic seminars and awareness classes for farmers are also arranged by the Society.

After completing 25 years of useful existence, the Cooperative is on the verge of diversification by venturing into food processing.  They are planning to set up a plant for manufacturing ice-cream and other milk-based products.
