Power cut or load shedding do not trouble Mary Thomas of Kuruvinakkunnel, Bharananganam, Pala, Kottayam in the least.  For she gets the electricity directly from the Sun.

It was the effort of her husband, late K.T.Thomas that brought solar electricity to their home.  They had a tissue culture lab that needed large supply of electricity.  And so he thought of harnessing solar energy for reducing the cost.  Accordingly, Solartec, Kochi was entrusted with the task of generating energy for the lab.  Later he extended the arrangements to the other needs of the house.

From terrace mounted solar panels, wires run to the battery, which gets charged from solar radiation.  There is an inverter to convert the current to AC.

Here the fridge, fan, water heater and mixer, all run on self-generated electricity.  Although the house has a KSEB connection, this consumption is only bare minimum.  That way they do not have to fear the electricity bill either.  During thunderstorms the inverter is switch off, as it is likely to be damaged by lightning.
