The supposedly smallest musical instrument in the world has been created by a Malayali from Puliyoor Sala Village, Kanya Kumari District, Tamil Nadu.

Jayaprakash’s 4.5 cm long 1.5 cm wide and 1mm thick ‘Sushiri’ is full of holes as the name indicates.  The instrument made of sandal wood and Devadaram is covered with a polyester cloth and is played using the mouth.

G.Jayaprakash, who comes from a family with musical tradition, needed 15 years of research and experiments to design the instrument, which can play all kinds of music.  ‘Sushiri’, which can be used in different ‘sruthis’ gives a melodious sound similar to that of nagaswaram or saxophone or clarinet.
