A doctor’s career progresses from the treatment of individual patients to managing men and infrastructure.  The story of Dr.S.Sivaraman is no different.

As an Assistant Surgeon at the T.B.Centre in the 1950s, he was appalled by the dilapidated building there.  To construct a proper building for the patients was a dream he nurtured.  But he had to wait many years to make that a reality.

In the meanwhile he completed diploma in tuberculosis treatment from Christian Medical College, Velloor and a diploma in public health from the Kerala University.

After 4 years of service in Kollam he came back to Thiruvananthapuram as director of the T.B.Centre.    And ex-officio he became the Secretary of T.B.Association.

During his tenure, Kerala was a front runner in the sales of stamps brought out by the Association.  And when the silver jubilee year of the stamps approached, he thought it the best time to think of a new building for the T.B.Centre.

The then Health Minister was full of appreciation for the idea of new building but pleaded lack of funds to take up the project.  He then advised Dr.Sivaraman to devise his own method to generate funds.

It was then that he turned from a doctor to a manager.  He hit upon the idea of conducting a lottery.  The government granted permission to the Association to go ahead with the scheme.  His personal request to the district collectors paid off and the tickets were sold out.  With the Rs.8 lakhs profit from the venture, he was able to complete the building in 1976 and thus achieve his ambition.

For his services in the treatment of TB, he has received numerous honours.  Gold medal of the TB Association of Andhra Pradesh, T.A.I.Oration award (1982) and Light for Life Foundation, Mumbai award (1995), the honour from the National TB Association etc. are some of them.
