C.V.VENUGOPAL: VITAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDIA’S FIRST HELICOPTER | ||||||
|
C.V.Venugopal, Additional General Manager in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bangalore can be proud of his contribution in developing the 1st indigenous helicopter of India. And for this contribution he has been chosen for the national award by Society of Defence Technologists. Head of the Helicopter Division, he and his team had worked hard to make the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) a reality. Following the British trade embargo, they were deprived of spare parts from that country. During the development of ALH, they had to indigenously develop the pneumatic suspension system. However, the technical consultants to the project were dead-against the move. Its chief Bender even made a wager that he would take off his oft-worn cap if the Indians could develop such a thing. Before long, the problem had to yield before the determination and hardwork of Indian scientists and the gentleman had to return home after removing the cap. Venugopal, who belongs to Cheriyaveettil, Ambalappara, Ottappalam, Palakkad graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Regional Engineering College, Kozhikode. Later he took Master’s Degree from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore before joining HAL as a Design Trainee. His wife is Santhakumari. Their only son Arun Kumar too is a Mechanical Engineer.
