JEEVODAYA: HOME OF SOLACE FOR AIDS PATIENTS

‘Jeevodaya’, Melechovva, Kannur

To extend the life of AIDS patients as much as possible, to make their remaining life as struggle-free as possible and above all to love all without disdain, these are the ideals that motivate the work of Sister Anila and others running ‘Jeevodaya’, a house for the unwanted AIDS patients at Melechovva, Kannur.

The daily needs and treatment of the patients are lovingly taken care of here.  There is no dearth of food or medicine and the inmates live with the feeling of being cared for.

Jeevodaya, which is part of Pratyasa Bhavan, started its activity in 1997 with 1 patient.  From the early days, Dr. Roy Pulikkan and Dr. Prasad have been helping with free treatment and advice.  For the past 1 year, Balan Vaidyan, Kumullil, Vatakara, has been providing free medicine to the home.

Although the people in the neighbourhood were antagonistic to the venture initially, of late there seems to be a thawing in rigid positions.  Occasional help from them is also not too rare.

Of the 38 patients who have come to the home so far, 23 are no more.
