For retired schoolteacher Janaki, Puthalath House, Maloor Panchayat, Kannur, remembering dates of birth of all and sundry is as simple as a snap.

As soon as a birth takes place in Maloor area, it is registered in the hard disk of Janaki teacher.  The people have more faith in the unfailing memory of teacher than the ledgers of the Panchayat.  And once registered, the information can be retrieved even after decades.

Says Janaki teacher, who has been a veritable store of dates for 5 decades: “I don’t know how, but I am able to do it.”

She had some interesting experiences while teaching at the New U.P.School, Panampatta, Maloor.  The headmaster would sometimes request her to identify an ex-student.  She would immediately respond: Of course this is Sahadevan’s son who completed class 7 in 1975.  It used to be said in the school that if Janaki teacher is present, there is no need to look up the school register.

She could easily spot the discrepancy between official and actual dates of birth of some of her colleagues.  It was then that she realized that silence is sometimes as important as any siddhi.

Similarly, when her ability resulted in the abandonment of marriage proposals, she tempered her utterances with caution.  Now she doesn’t give out information without verifying the purpose for which it will be used.

Once at Mookambika Temple, Kolloor, she surprised Yesudas by correctly stating his son’s birthday.  Astrology and Puranas are her 2 other interests.
