MALAYALI WOMAN WHO IS A WRITER IN DANISH

Sara Mathai Stinus

Far away, in Denmark, a Malayali woman has shown proficiency by writing poems in Danish.  Sara Mathai Stinus, sister of former Vice Chancellor Samuel Mathai, who has settled down at Denmark along with her husband, is this unique person.

Several of her poems have appeared in a leading daily of Denmark.  She is also represented in some anthologies.

“I am keeping my fingers crossed as my publisher is going ahead with plans to publish a collection of Indian fables which I have retold in Danish”, she says.  Her next project is to adopt some of the Birbal stories.

Sara was born in North Karnataka where her father, who was with National Missionary Society, migrated.  Although they spoke Malayalam at home, the medium of instruction at school was Kannada.  It was at a later stage that she learned Malayalam.  Thus she reads printed matte in Malayalam “with some effort and guesswork”, as she puts it.

Sara was a lecturer in history and politics at Wilson College, Mumbai before she left for Denmark.  For a short while, she and her husband worked as volunteer teachers of adult education at Tanzania.

Sara’s husband is also a poet and writer.  He has translated the works of R.K.Narayanan, Premchand and Khuswant Singh to Danish.  She has not severed her ties with Kerala.  She makes it a point to visit Kerala every year.
