THE BUDDING FARMER

Sivanachary of Moonganani, Malankotta, Vizhikkathode, Kottayam.

A single pineapple weighing 16.5 kg?  Yes, these and more such ‘cultivated’ wonders can be seen in the farm of Sivanachary of Moonganani, Malankotta, Vizhikkathode, Kottayam.

Guava weighing one kilo is another item there.  Mango three full of fruits formed by budding, one-foot tall green chilly-laden plants, these are the appealing sights in his land.

He looks after the flora like a father bringing up the children.  Only during unavoidable occasions does Sivanachary absent himself from the farm.

His own land of 45 cents and leased land of 2 acres comprise his cultivation.  While working from dawn to dusk in the farm, he finds time to help his blind wife in the kitchen.

He had received a cash award of Rs.1500 from the then Agricultural Minister for the commendable cultivation of ginger.  Besides, the Kanjirappally Panchayat had chosen him the ‘best farmer’.

A keen devotee of Lord Siva, he offers the first fruit of his labour to the Chirakkadavu Mahadeva temple.

The secret of his success is his ability to bud new variety of crops.
