YOUNG MASTER OF CARNATIC MUSIC

Kannan, Koippalli Matam, Changankulangara, Karunagappally, Kollam

A 12-year-old boy who has already performed at more than 1000 carnatic music concerts – that is young Kannan.  His other achievements include the following – Kalaprathibha prize in District Children’s Youth Festival for 7 years, performance in AIR and TV channels, 1st prize in classical and light music in SAARC Festival held at Thiruvananthapuram in 1992 etc.

After hearing the young boy perform, the noted singer P.Suseela remarked, “ Golden voice.  He will become an emperor in the music world.”

Kannan is the only child of Ajithakumari,  Koippalli Matam, Changankulangara, Karunagappally, Kollam.  At the age of 4, he demonstrated his inclination for music.  From 5 years of age he has been learning carnatic music.  His early gurus include Kannamangalam Prabhakaran Pillai and Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma.  Now he is training under B. Sasikumar of AIR.

Kannan says he sings about 250 ragas.  But his talent is not limited to music alone.  He is the topper in studies in his class.  Since he cannot attend many classes, his mother and teachers make extra effort to coach him during other times.

His family is musically gifted.  His grandfather, who initially spotted his talent, is a musician.  His mother learned music but could not complete the training.

His has interest in drawing also.  He smiles sitting in front of his drawings.  Besides, he is learning now to play the violin, says his grandfather.  He has interest in another unconnected field also – Karate!

Though interested in sports and games, he doesn’t strain in them much for the fear that it may adversely affect his voice.

Indian Fine Arts Society, Mumbai has now invited him for a performance there.
