For more than 30 years now, Padmanabhan, Meethale Kunnath, Chengottukavu, Kozhikode, is engaged in rearing cows.  His long experience, knowledge distilled into wisdom and willingness to help those in distress makes him a friend in need for those fostering cows in his village.

For the last 3 years, his favourite ‘Nandini’ has been winning the award as the best milch cow in Kozhikode District.

He does all the jobs in connection with the upkeep of the cows, which now number 3.  Come rain or snow, before 5 oclock in the morning he cleans the cowshed and bathes the animals before getting ready with disinfected hands to start milking.

“May be because I keep the shed and surroundings clean and bathe the cows everyday, there has been no major disease during the past 30 years,” he says.  For minor ailments he has his own medicines made from condiments and natural products.

He sells the milk mostly to the co-operative society in the village.  On odd days when this is not possible, he converts the milk into curd and sells the buttermilk in packets after extracting the butter.  The ghee made from it has good demand during Sabarimala pilgrimage season.

If the cows have been rewarding him with a flood of milk all these years, he has been reciprocating the feeling with an abundance of love in his heart for his dumb friends.
