Here is someone who is trying to elevate pavilion-making into an art.

For the last 7 years, Ayyappan, Udiyankulangara, Thiruvananthapuram, has been designing and constructing the main entrance to the pavilion of ‘Thrissur Pooram’.

The other achievements of the artist include constructing a pavilion for KSEB at the National Science Conference, constructing the main entrance to the national exhibition at Harippad, and the design of the model of NTPC in that exhibition, etc.  Besides, he has done numerous ‘floats’ for various Government departments during Onam Festivals.

Ayyappan took up the brush to fight off poverty at home.  He even dabbled in the film world as an assistant art director before realizing his field of activity.

He returned from Chennai to start a studio, ‘Ayyappas’ at Udayankulangara.  Slowly, he turned his attention to pavilion-building.

“Much effort and attention is required for this job”, he says.  For example, the 85 feet wide main entrance to the exhibition at Harippad required 10 days of labour from 15 workers including Ayyappan.

He has the desire to pass on his skills to the next generation.  Towards this end, he is planning to set up an institution at Chenthitta, Thiruvananthapuram.
