Presence of mind differentiates a rescuer from an onlooker.  One night, when Shaji, Amikkad, Kanjiramattam, Thodupuzha saw his neighbour’s child with his shirt aflame in front of their house, he knew what he had to do.

Pushing aside the distraught mother Devaki, he swooped down on the child Vinu, and then jumped into the well in his compound.  With one hand around the child, he held the rope from the pulley with the other and dived into the water thrice.  By then the fire on the dress had been extinguished.

In the meanwhile, more people had gathered around the well and they pulled out the rescuer and the rescued.

Luckily for Shaji and Vinu, there was 15ft water in the well.  Also, there were no rocks at the bottom of the well.

The boy’s back was burned badly.  Doctors said he might need plastic surgery.

It is opined that some bottle containing chemicals must have exploded while incinerating the waste from the household.
