70-year-old Saraswathy Amma, who retired from Travancore Devaswam Board, is the first woman ‘nagaswaram’ artiste in the Board.  Now after retirement, she keeps the instrument close to her lips by performing during weddings and in nearby temples.

Saraswathy Amma, Puthen Veettil, Kuzhivilakam, Gandhi Nagar, Peroorkada, Thiruvananthapuram, continues her 50-year-old ‘sadhana’ of music ignoring ill health and advanced age.

She started learning classical music at the age of 8. Later, during the high school days, she started learning ‘nagaswaram’ under Kulathoor Narayanan Asan.  Her debut was at the age of 20.

She is lucky to have her father, husband and brother as ‘nagaswaram’ artistes.  She plays undiluted classical music in her chosen instrument. She is elated by the recent opportunity to perform at the Sabarimala temple.
