For 34 years now, a German doctor, Hilda Seena has been serving the people of the remote and hilly tracts of Vagamon, Idukki.  During this time she has so ingrained herself at Vagamon that she remembers the patients by name, enquire about their progress since the last visit and does not forget to advise them on the dos and don’ts.

Mitranikethan, the hospital where she works, was constructed by Laurie Baker, the illustrious architect.  And the first doctor there was his wife Dr.Elezabeth Baker.  That was in 1964.  After 4 years when Bakers planned to shift to Thiruvananthapuram, they requested Dr.Seena to manage the hospital for 2 years.  Dr. Seena who was then serving at Pushpagiri Hospital, Thiruvalla, readily agreed.

She and her friend, Italian nurse Aleena, took up the reigns of the hospital.  Both were members of an international service organization.

Within 2 years Dr.Seena had grown as fond of Vagamon as the people there were fond of ‘Seenachechi’.  And so the foreigner duo decided to continue there.

The doctor did not restrict her services to the hospital.  She went to the nooks and crannies of the area to treat patients.  She conducted awareness classes about healthcare.  For those who needed expert treatment at Pala and Kottayam, she provided assistance to travel.

In 1994 her bosom friend Aleena died.  But her work continues.  She lives in the hospital quarters along with her colleagues.  During rare moments of leisure she reads books on theology and political science.
