Kanmani, Swati Tirunal College of Music, Thiruvananthapuram

She wrote the University exam with her legs and won the first rank hands down. Kanmani, a student of B. Vocal at Swati Tirunal College of Music, Thiruvananthapuram won the first rank ignoring her inherent disadvantages but concentrating on her available talents.

And Kanmani’s talents are not limited to academics.  She has been a vocal performer on stage since her arangettam while still a student of 4th grade.  In painting too she has achieved appreciable success.

Of late, she has learned to make ‘nettippattams’ which are used to decorate elephants’ heads during festive occasions.  Though it started as a hobby, it was appreciated in the social media and she has now started making a small earning out of it.

Her multi-talented efforts have been recognized by government.  She won a prize of the Union Social Welfare ministry for her creativity in 2019.  Various other awards have come her way in the fields of music, painting and academics.

Her father is working in the Middle East while her mother is a home-maker.  Her mother has been a constant mentor and support for her music-related forays.  Her younger brother too has been a constant support for her.  In fact, he is keen that her achievements are better than his.

She dreams of continuing her studies for M.A. vocal at the same college and making music her career.
