Pioneers are more of doers than orators.  And so it is with Dinesh of Cheruvadi, Kozhikode, a carpenter who has studied only up to class 7, but who has designed a working model of a tractor that he uses for his needs.  But in Dinesh’s case, there is one more reason for the silent work: he is deaf and dumb from birth.

His silent and lonely childhood was dealt another jolt by the death of his father.  Though he dropped studies and turned to carpentry, his mind was full of curiosity and questionings: the ingredients for any creative work.  He turned to drawing and sculpture and tinkering with electrical devices as channels for his expressions.

His acumen in carpentry too was noticeable for its measurements and shapes.  It was during this time that he had an idea unconnected with carpentry.

Dinesh decided to design and manufacture a tractor for his use.  Like a true artist he knew that the engine of a motorbike, the tyres of the jeep and other engine parts of autorickshaw could very well be amenable to his creation.

With his acumen for drawing, getting the technical assistance of workshops in the fabrication of his idea was not too difficult.  And lo, and behold, his tractor, built at a tenth of the cost of the regular one, but capable of carrying the same load like a regular tractor, became a reality on the roads of Cheruvadi.

He has no plans to sell his creation just as government machinery has no plans to utilize his talent.

And so Dinesh goes about thinking about his next project silently.
