When dedication is strong and systematic, even a hobby can become a recognized scientific pursuit, as the case of K.Sajan Jose, a  shows.

It was in the 1980s that Jose took to nurturing dammer bees which produce ‘Cheruthen’, much in demand for its medicinal value.  The hobby broadened systematically and after more than 20 years, in 2006, he had a chance to present his studies at an international seminar organized at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.  A year later he was invited to attend a brainstorming session organized by the Department of Biotechnology of the Union Government.  And he was the only non-scientist among the participants.

The tag of scientist / investigator was not very late in coming.  He is now principal co-investigator in Kerala for studies on stingless bees conducted by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.  The work of the “honey man from Kerala” soon started attracting faculty members and students of the University to his farm.  His work was given further boost when he was designated as principal investigator in two research projects funded by University Grants Commission.

He has a collection of about 250 colonies which fetch him good returns for the ‘Cheruthen’.  He writes frequently in farm journals and has co-authored a book on the topic with his research guide, Shaju Thomas.

An earthen pot or a wooden box and lots of patience and perseverance are the key to turning a hobby into a scientific pursuit, his case would suggest
