The courage and presence of mind of teenager Dinu saved housewife Pushpalatha and 3 young ones from drowning in the check dam at Kalavappadam Kundil Mukku near Vadakkanchery, Thrissur.

Pushpalatha and her two children had come to the bathing ghat along with her sister’s daughter.  While she was washing cloths, the children were taking bath, standing on the bathing steps.

The unfortunate sequence started with 8-year-old Sandra slipping and falling into the reservoir.  She somehow caught hold of Neethu who in turn pulled Sandhya.  Thus the three fell into the water.  Seeing this development, Pushpalatha, who did not know swimming, also jumped into the deep waters.

As the four were struggling in the water, Dinu, a neighbour jumped into the 15 feet deep water and brought them one by one to safety.  Daughter of headload worker Gangadharan and Devaki, Dinu says it was the confidence born out of ability to swim that made her jump into the deep.
