It was an idea hatched in a railway compartment.  For accountant Mony Nair, who had worked in Mumbai in 6 companies in the span of 8 years, workload and the commuting involved were becoming too much of a strain.  She discussed this with a fellow commuter, Rajasree, who too was thinking of starting something on her own.

Rajasree discussed this with her brother and he suggested starting a company to manufacture transformer strips based on drawing given by different clients – like the one he was working in.  He imparted the basic technical knowledge to the B.Com graduate that was Mony.  With further help from him in terms of introduction to clients and skilled workers, in 1996 the duo started Global Lamination at Wagle Estate in Thane.  But the contractor took the novices for a ride and by the time he was shown the door, the company went into the red.  The contractor had withdrawn the workers and so the machines started idling.  It was at this juncture that Rajasree jumped out of the leaky ship.

But Mony Nair was not ready to give up.  Resigning her job she plunged into the management of her company.  As a first step, she induced a skilled worker to leave a similar company by paying him double wages.  The idling machines slowly came to life.  She too picked up the technical aspects of the job within 15 days.

From then it was only rise and rise for Mony Nair, who incidentally modified her name to Money Nair, to take advantage of numerological advice.  Every 2 years she added another company to her kitty and is now the chief of 5 engineering companies.  Her companies’ clients include Mahendra Electricals, Apollo, Aplab etc.

Advice of everyone, including her husband, was against starting the business.   But fired by a strong determination, nothing could stop her.

Receiving the Rashtriya Ratan award for best women entrepreneur from the Andhra Pradesh Governor 3 years ago, she considers her finest moment.
