The NSS volunteers of Vocational Higher Secondary School, NIT, Kozhikode knew what they had to do to help two of their schoolmates who had lost their father, and whose mother could ill-afford to complete the small house whose foundation had been laid by her late husband.  They put in their physical efforts, and with able help from teachers, were able to construct a house for 4th standard student Sree Rahul and his elder sister Sree Priya of 10th standard.

During the construction, students showed keen enthusiasm for sieving sand and carrying stones to the workspot.  When teachers and students put in their best efforts, the people of the locality chipped in with their contributions in cash and kind.

Thus, after teacher N.A.Augustine had ignited the spark of the idea, the Rs.1¼ lakh house shaped itself based more on enthusiasm than resource.  For Baby Vinodiny, mother of the two children, it was a great relief after her husband Subrahmanyan, a tailor, had suddenly died, leaving her to fend for herself and her children.

The labour of love that was completed by the students in 4 months is to be handed over to Sree Rahul by the Minister for Education.
