3 generations ago, when Pallam C.C.Mathew’s ancestors followed the good practice of providing food to whoever came to their house, a traditional healer was once served food by his great grandmother.  The pleased healer then said: “now I shall give what I possess”, and passed on a secret herbal formulation to cure jaundice.  Since then, for the past 4 generations, the family has been engaged in the successful treatment of jaundice and even Hepatitis B.

The 18-ingredient medicine is given in 3 modes depending on the severity of the patient’s condition.  For those in the initial stages of the disease, the medicine in powdery form is given.  And for those in the advanced stage,  a ‘kashayam’ mixed in cow’s milk is the potent medicine.  And for those in critical stage, ‘nasyam’ is resorted to.

Usually, the medicine has to be taken for 6 days.  Strict dietary controls have to be maintained for another 6 more days.  In addition, the patient has to avoid chicken, egg, beef, roots, bananas and lemon for the next 2 months.

Other controls to be exercised include non-sleeping during day time, bathing twice a day and avoiding cold water for drinking.

Among those who have been saved by the treatment are heavy drinkers as well as patients with Hepatitis B.

After a relative with background in Ayurveda came to live with them, some scientific changes have been made in the formulations.  “Those who take our medicine will not again contact this disease in their lifetime,” sys Mathew with confidence.
