Without the help of Government or Organisations, a young woman has taken upon herself the worthwhile task of providing a sanatorium for the treatment of elephants. For Nibha Namboodirippad of Pathirikkunnath, Kodiyerimana, Nagaparambu, Athavanadu, near Thirunavaya, Malappuram, a post graduate in Zoology, this is a logical extension of her love for the pachyderms since childhood days.

She is engaged the whole day in taking care of sick elephants in the 3˝-acre land around her house. At the moment, it is an elephant from a temple in Thrissur that is undergoing treatment in the sanatorium, where noted elephant-doctor Avanapparambu Maheswaran Namboodirippad treats the elephant.

Nibha had devoted 4 years to the study of elephants. Along with Dr.P.B.Giridas of Ayyanthol, she has co-authored ‘Elephant SOS: Guide to Elephant Welfare’. It was after she had attended a workshop for mahouts at Thrissur 6 years ago that Nibha revealed her project to start the elephant care centre to her father Madhavan Namboothirippad, an engineer. Although the venture was an expensive one, he gave the go-ahead, seeing the affection she had towards elephants. He permitted the use of house and land to start the centre.

She plans to generate funds to run the centre through eco-tourism.
