He takes mobility to new vistas with his 23-kg scooter that can be transported in a suitcase. Babu Chempayil, a pharmacist of Tirur, Malappuram, has designed a bike that can be expanded and collapsed in a matter of minutes.

The final year Mechanical students of Malappuram Engineering College had cast the idea of the little bike in Babu’s mind. He took up the challenge and with the help of few workers at his workshop, Shyam Dev Industries at Kuttippuram, designed the mini scooter.

Using 70 cc engine of Bajaj Sunny and the tyres of Bajaj Cub scooter, they soon came up with a workable design. Foldable handle, node for reducing the distance between tyres etc were fabricated in the workshop itself. The single seat of the bike too is foldable. On folding, the bike measures just 33 inches high and 40 inches long. He has ordered a special carry bag to accommodate it.

It took Babu and his team mates Prasanth, Vijeesh and Ranjith Babu 1 month to complete the prototype. On many evenings, Babu goes around Kuttippuram market in his little bike, arousing the curiosity of the passers by.
