A cooperative society of workers, formed 80 years ago with 16 members and a capital of Rs.16, is today a successful organization with an asset base of Rs.30 crores and membership strength of 411.  The Uralunkal Labour Contract Cooperative Society was formed by the progressive Vagbhadananda Guru at Nadapuram in an era when casteism and its oppressive manifestations were prevalent in the society.

The Society pays out daily more than Rs.2 lakhs as wages.  In addition to wages, the workers receive Bonus, Provident Fund, Insurance etc.  Other the members, the Society has 1604 associated workers.

The assets of the Society include 75 acre land, stone crusher unit, holo-brick factory, stone quarry etc.  The quality and punctuality of their construction has been well appreciated.  When the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi came to Madappalli College, the Society constructed the helipad and the 600m road in 24 hours.

The Sociey that started its contract work with an assignment for Rs.915 has now the capability to take up works worth crores.  They had completed the Rs.7 crocre Chorod flyover approach road on a war footing.

Paleri Karunakaran had led the Society during its formative years from 1952 to 1984.  The present president is his some Paleri Ramesan.  For his efforts to modernize and develop the Society, he has received many honours including the Rotary Internatioal award.
