There is a bus stop called ‘Jaundice Stop’ on the way from Thodupuzha to Velliyamattom.  It is the stop in front of Elikkutti’s house.

80-year-old Elikkutti has been treating jaundice patients for more than 60 years.  The single doze medicine, which Elikkutti dispenses, is a secret concoction revealed to her ancestor by a wandering healer.  Her mother and grandmother had treated patients on these revealed lines.

Her medicine, made from herbs, should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach.  Unlike many other systems of treatment for jaundice, her medicine doesn’t demand restrictions on diet.  Rather, the control is on taking bath and doing hard work.  The patient is advised to take bath 5 to 6 times a day and to avoid strenuous tasks.

According to her, if earlier the disease used to be cured by a single doze of medicine, now sometimes few patients have to be administered a second doze.

Her husband is Devassya.  Their eldest daughter Annamma is following the footsteps of her mother.  She too treats jaundice patients.

Though Elikkutti has treated patients for 6 decades and a few of them have even vomited on her body, she hasn't contacted the disease.  She wonders whether jaundice is an infectious disease.
