For 20 years he walked throughout Kerala on foot.  He spoke of love at venues numbering more than 60000.  Author of 60 books in English and 38 in Malayalam.  And now at the age of 82, still active.  Sadhu Ittiyaveera is a man of many parts.

Born at Kollappilly near Pala as the son of Anna and Mathai in 1922, Ittiyaveera joined the Army during 2nd World War.  He soon has enough of it and came out of the regimental framework.  Ittiyaveera then joined the Jesuit Order and studied theology at various institutes.  However, 9 months before he was to don the robe of a priest, he bid adieu to the Order too.

Since then, from 1958 to 1975, he moved from place to place throughout Kerala, talking to people on love based on the classics of major religions.

His interest in science, especially its applications for the benefit of common man, saw him form ‘Anusandhan’, an organization in Raipur, Madhya Pradesh, to utilize solar energy practically.  He even spent a major portion of the Albert Schweitzer award that had been conferred on him, for this purpose.

At the end of his long wanderings, acceding to the constant plea of his friends and relates, he agreed to settle down at Kothamangalam.  The well wishers contributed financial help to purchase 10 acres of land for him at Eramalloor.  Again, bowing to the persuasions of his well wishers, he tied the nuptial knot at the age of 56.  His son Jomon is now a student of M.A in English.

It were the journeys in North India that conferred on him the title, ‘Sadhu’.  He has traveled to USA, Canada, Israel, Thailand etc and shared his experience there.

Many other awards and honours have come his way.  But his still-unfulfilled ambition is to start an ashram and a study centre.
