The blind have better hearing power and memory.  While others may need the written note to remember things, we, the blind, can remember them.  So says Priyesh.C.U, a postgraduate student of Chemistry at Maharajas College, Ernakulam.  Sight-impaired since 4, he was a first rank holder in M.G.University in his degree exam and is at present the Chairman of the College -  the first blind person to be elevated to that post in the history of the college.

He learned during his graduation days by recording classroom lectures and by hearing the notes read by someone.  Now his learning aid is JAWS software that converts scanned English text to speech.  Besides, he is continuing his habit of recording the lectures.

A student of the college since the last 7 years, it was his ideological stand that made him a choice for the post of Chairman.  Son of Ugrasenan and Prasanna of Choothaparambil, Panambukad, Priyesh’s dream is to qualify in the UGC exam and become a lecturer.  “Blindness will not be a limiting factor in offering knowledge to the students,” he says with confidence.
