After half a century of draught in the region, it took the guardians of law and order to bring an upsurge of water in the area.  The Police Academy, situated in Ramavarma Puram in Thrissur has built 2 check dams that makes the 800-trainee and 200-staff Academy self sufficient in water even in the severest summer.

16 years ago, Retired Assistant Commandant M.Sivasankara Pillai had initiated the steps towards construction of checkdams.  While the 1.8 crore litre capacity first dam cost Rs.5 lakhs and took 5 months to complete, the recent one with capacity of 1 crore litres needed only Rs.2 lakhs.  In addition, the small ponds in the campus contribute their might, thus pegging the total capacity of the Academy at 4 crores litres.

Though the check dams have been constructed inside the campus for the Academy’s advantage, its indirect benefits accrue to the local people also.  The water level in the wells of the area have shown appreciable rise.
