Socially isolated and economically backward, the Chakliya tribe of Ranganathapuram, Attappady is untouchable even to the adivasis of the place.  These tribesmen and women, who work as farm labourers, are subject to periodic unemployment which deprives them of even the meager wages they get from the farm land.  It is in this backdrop that the teak nursery being run by the Chakliya women at Ranganathapuram assumes significance.

The Beneficiary Association of Ranganathapuram had, from various environmental projects, gathered Rs.2.5 lakhs.  Using Rs.75,000 from this fund and  Rs.25,000 loan from AHADS, the nursery project was launched.  The 10 women team includes 75-year-old Maruthi and 35-year-old Gauri.  Gauri, who happens to belong to Okliya Kounder, has to face the boycott of her community for joining hands with other Chakliya women.  But she is undaunted and continues with the work that is fulfilling, both financially and socially.

The team produces hardened teak saplings and stumps suitable for the arid climate of Attappady.  Starting in July 2002, the Association has so far produced 2 lakhs saplings based on the Konni and Nilambur varieties of teak.  While teak stumps are priced at Rs.2 each, the saplings in polythene cover sell for Rs.3  So far products worth Rs.60,000 have been sold by the Association.

In addition to better daily wages, the venture has helped the members of different communities to mingle and work for a common purpose.  Perhaps the social change being brought about by the united work of different communities would have even more significance in the long run.
