Justice delayed is justice denied.  And so C.N.Ramachandran Nair, Judge of Kerala High Court, makes it a point to dispose of petitions coming before his single bench at the earliest.  Last year this fast track judge was able to dispose a record 9066 cases that came before his bench.  And as he mentions, 40% of these were disposed at the time of admission itself.

Ramachandran Nair’s attitude towards speedy justice was the same even when he was practicing as an advocate.  Though rich clients were ready to pay handsomely for his services, many a times he advised them against litigation that was likely to drag on and not bring them victory at the end of the exercise.  “It was my policy to avoid unnecessary litigation,” he says.

Last year, his disposal of 9066 cases was a national record among all the High Courts of India.  While the average disposal per judge at the State level was 3103, at the national level it was 1976.  He however attributes his feat to the cooperation of the Chief Justice, brother Judges and other staff of the High Court.

“I am always thinking whether a petition could be disposed off on the same day it comes before my bench.  Sometimes I have been successful,” he says.

Justice C.N.Ramachandran Nair was elevated to the High Court on September 7, 2001.  His wife is Padmaja.  Sankar, a student of law and Gopal, a Plus One student are his children.
