For the past 30 years he has been a compassionate doctor to the poor cancer patients who reach his Ouseph-Marium Cancer Institute.  And Dr.Paul Mampally, who runs the centre with love as the most potent medicine, has been providing free treatment and medicine and even food to the poor patients and their bystanders all these years like a good Samaritan.

Mampally, whose demeanor and appearance suggests a monastic life, is a qualified doctor who did his specialization in cancer care from Germany after doing his MBBS from Manipal Medical College. In 1973, while he was the head of cancer wing at General Hospital, Ernakulam, he resigned from Government service and started the cancer institute named after his parents.  In 1975, he constructed a 20-bed block and has been serving the patient since, either through his ministrations or through surgery.

The doctor, who has been an inmate of monasteries for the past 3 decades, lives a Spartan life.  His mundu and shirt, vegetarian diet and silent mien hides another facet of his: the doctor who often visits Italy, Germany and US to learn about the latest trends in cancer care and to lecture on cancer in these countries.  Whatever money he earns by these lectures is spent on the patients back home.  Whether here or abroad, Dr.Mampally prefers to stay in ashrams and wear the same mundu and shirt.

According to him, what the patients awaiting death require are love and care.  The presence of dear ones and availability of chosen food cheer them up.  He is prepared to sacrifice the common yardstick of good food for the sake of bringing cheer to a dying heart.

Dr.Mampally declares that prayer is his strength and he finds great joy in viewing Christ in the patients he treats.  His father and mother are his greatest roll models.
