Even as he crosses the silver jubilee of his retirement from Government service, Varghese continues his passion and mission of the noble profession of teaching.  The only difference is that now the ‘students’ are the would be teachers and the service is gratis.

81-year-old Varghese first joined as a teacher of English at Marthandam High School way back in 1955.  After working at various schools and institutes, he retired from service in 1978.  But that was only in paper; or rather it was just the beginning of his more productive phase.

As a teacher at various institutes like St.Albert’s, Ernakulam, St. Joseph’s, Ernakulam, Rajagiri, Kalamasseri, B.Ed centers at Cheruvattoor, Idappally, Palluruthy, Kolancherry and Muvattupuzha, he is continuing his silent task of teaching and motivating.

Based on his half a century of experience in teaching he cautions parents against conditioning the children with comments like, you will win or you will lose.  This will destroy their innate ability to learn, he warns.  Instead they must be made strong enough to face any challenge.

As someone who has dedicated his life to the mission of teaching, his message to the teaching community is this: “teaching should be based on sincerity and dedication, for it is such a noble work”.
