A school teacher who spreads the message of social causes through music road shows: the description may give a gist of the work that Vishnu Bhat, a teacher of music at Vellikkoth, Kasargod is doing for many years now.

A music yatra to spread the message of breast feeding, another to create awareness about traffic rules, still another to wean the passionate ones from the path of political assassinations, Bhat has so far performed 19 such yatras in many parts of the State.  The march could either be by bullock cart, on foot or by train.  Other members of his team are about 10 of his students.

The 1st journey undertaken by him was during 1987.  Based on an appeal by the then Chief Minister, Bhat conducted a concert in Raja’s High School, Neeleswaram.  By the end of the programme, they could collect Rs.3000 from the venue for contributing to the Chief Minister’s Fund.

The success of the venture prompted him to undertake a State-wide journey in 1995.  In the same year, he composed music for the award winning children’s movie, ‘Mini’.

Bhat, who has won the national award for best teachers, remembers an incident from the State-wide yatra.  At Malappuram, an inebriated man tried to mess up their music programme.  Ignoring all taunts, they went on with the music.  At the end of the performance, the man came and apologized for the bad behaviour.  An indication, indeed, of the power of music.
