From one of the fishing boats that reach Puthenthope around 9 o’clock in the morning, a young man scurries to his home, has his bath in a jiffy and snatches a standing breakfast before dashing off to attend B.A (Malayalam) classes at St.Xavier’s College, Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram.

20-year-old Babu Pereira, who has been going to the sea since he was 14, dons the role of a fisherman to supplement the income of his family. He utilizes the Rs.50 a day that he earns, for the needs of the family.  His father Sunny Pereira and younger brother Sajan are fishermen.  Mother Isabel is a cleaner in a hospital at Saudi Arabia.  Younger sister Sibi is a student of 6th standard.

His interests are not limited to the job and his studies.  He is an active member of the Malayala Samajam.  He acts in campus theatre and mimes.  In fact he had acted in the drama staged by the Samajam on Friday.

His teacher and noted poet V.Madhusoodanan Nair comments about him as the boy who does not hide anything in his mind.

About his first experience in the sea, he explains: “Though it was a big boat and there were 8 or 9 persons on board, I was afraid.  Many times I vomited.  After that many a times I have gone in boats and catamaran even without any companions.  Now not going to the sea gives me an uneasy feeling !
