After Shahul Hameed realized that the loose brackish sand in his 7-acre land at Puthiyiruthi sea shore, Ponnani wouldn’t help him for agricultural purposes, he did what was a bold alternative: remove the grainy sand and replace it with more clayey substitute.

Truckloads of loose sand were removed and replaced with sufficient quantity of red earth.  A compound wall was constructed to box in the earth and coconut was planted.  The use of organic manure added to the fertility of the soil, enabling him to plant more varieties of trees and vegetables.

Thus in the midst of cashew nut trees all around, Hameed’s farm sports a variety of coconuts, arecanuts, bananas and other fruit bearing trees and vegetables.  In the middle of the farm is a perennial pond which doubles as hatchery for fish.  His banana cultivation in 1 acre fetched 2-truckload full of bananas.

Vegetables like tomato, bitter gourd, ladies finger etc are attractions in his kitchen garden.  In 1-acre land he cultivates paddy for household purposes.  Not to be left out of this idyllic setting are domestic animals like cows, dogs, ducks, monkeys etc. which too find a place in Hameed’s scheme of things.

Cowdung-based plant supplies cooking gas to the kitchen.   The icing on the cake are the medicinal plants which grow in one portion of the once barren farm.
